South Korea will prioritize vaccinating Olympic athletes before they travel to Japan for the Tokyo Games this summer. The Korean Sport and Olympic Committee confirmed to CNN on Wednesday that South Korea is making an exception for the athletes and allowing them to skip vaccine priority. Currently, the COVID-19 vaccine is available to health care workers and staff and residents of nursing facilities. The general public will not be able to receive the vaccine until July. However, officials are making exceptions for athletes competing in the Tokyo Olympics that are due to travel to Japan for "public service." The Olympic games are scheduled to begin July 23 and have already been postponed a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. South Korea's Disease Control and Prevention Agency also confirmed that it will allow people who are traveling on essential government business to receive the coronavirus vaccine. The agency announced that essential government and economic workers can begin applying to receive their vaccine on March 17.
